Would you like to know more?
Excellent! I’d love to tell you about the story!
What’s this Issue About, Anyway?
Let me lay it out for you! We have science fiction! We have action! We have cool gadgets, amazing weapons, and terrifying aliens threats!
Knox and his crew of intergalactic surveyors—fresh off of spending 20 accidental years in cryosleep—arrive on a dangerous planet with one goal: complete an exclusive contract before Faraday and her rival group of deadly, tech-savvy mercenaries. All bets are off as both crews lie, cheat, steal, and kill their way toward completing their objectives. Complicating matters is the vicious, invasive alien species that now inhabits the target planet. It’s just another day at the office.
The Story Behind the Story!
The Obsoletes is a series about a lot of things. We have a beautiful sci-fi world. We have a cast of six characters, all with their own unique motivations and personalities. We have creepy aliens.
The thing I keep coming back to with The Obsoletes is that at its core, it’s a story about being comfortable with who you are, and its a story about family.
It’s no secret that I’m getting older. I see advertisements for new technologies and I think, “Why on earth would I ever need that?” I’m becoming the person who wonders why I feel so pressured to maintain a social media presence when more often than not, I’d love for this newsletter to be the only way that people can contact me. The events happening in the world often make me feel lost. Sad. Confused. I’d like to change the world, but I don’t remotely know where to begin. After all, I’m just some writer. Does anything I do really matter in the grand scheme of things?
Look out! I got deep!
The Obsoletes is my way of processing those feelings. A crew of intergalactic prospectors is accidentally stuck in cryosleep for 20 years. When they come out, everything is different. Where do they fit in? Do they?
More importantly, the series is a story about family. Not just in a sense of our relatives, but how our family becomes the people we choose to surround ourselves with, whether not we share a connection by blood.
In my opinion, issue 2 is really, really cool.
We have our “obsolete” crew of Knox, Wicker, and Brack going head-to-head against the “upstart” crew of Faraday, Aerin, and Eon. It’s a race to see who can complete a dangerous job first in order to secure a lucrative contract.
The adjective I’d use to describe the issue is “breathless.”
I wanted this episode to fly. To soar. To be pulse-pounding as things go from bad to worse for the characters. To be a constant barrage of big action and character development. I’m so thrilled with how this issue came out, and I’m excited for you to experience the twists and turns this issue takes, setting up a new status quo for the remaining two issues.
If you’re a fan of films such as Aliens or Starship Troopers, you’ll love The Obsoletes.
