Hey! I need your help!
This special edition newsletter is to tell you all about how issue #8 of my sci-fi/comedy comic book series UNIT 44 is now available for preorder from publisher Alterna Comics. But, if you read nothing else in this newsletter, let it be this:
Unit 44 is on the verge of being canceled.
So, these last couple of issues of Unit 44? They haven’t sold very well. In fact, they’ve undersold to the point where I’ve been informed that if we don’t meet our sales benchmark of 300 copies preordered during this campaign, Unit 44 will be cut from the team, so to speak.
It might surprise you to learn that series artist Aleks Jovic and I do not want to be canceled. Alterna Comics has believed in my wacky little comic for 8 years now, and the last thing I want to do is let them down. Aleks and I will stop at nothing to meet that 300-copy sales benchmark, but we need your help to do it!
Just a reminder that this comic book costs a meager $2.25, and we’d love nothing more than for you to enjoy our irreverent series about inept Area 51 employees (as well as all the great titles from Alterna). Please consider lending support so we can keep this series going and bring readers on all kinds of bonkers adventures.
Cool? Cool. Thank you for reading that.
Now, onward to…
The Cover!
Aleks and colorist Andrew Pate knocked this one out of the park! Anytime we can put word balloons on the cover, it’s a guaranteed good time.
But I know that deep down, the question you’re asking is…
What’s this Issue About, Anyway?
Let me lay it out for you!
While investigating a suspicious mountaintop murder, Gibson and Hatch learn that the killer is none other than Death himself. But when the Grim Reaper takes a liking to the fellas and hitches a ride back to Area 51, the agents fear that they may be his next victims.
If that was too many words, enjoy this video trailer!
The Story Behind the Story!
The “Monster of the Week” for this issue is none other than The Grim Reaper. The Pale Rider. Death.
Why?
I think I’m scared of dying. Like, irrationally. I mean, what’s more horrifying than the idea of being… you know… not here? I look back at my body of work—stories, games, comic books—and I see that death has been a constant theme throughout the last decade. But, rather than go to therapy like a normal person, I decided to work through some of the issues by putting them into a comic book. With jokes! That’s healthy, right?
What would you do if you met the grim reaper face to face? That’s exactly what I explore in this issue of Unit 44.
But the most important thing to note about this issue? It’s a game-changer.
Season 1 (issues #1-4) saw bumbling agents Gibson and Hatch losing the secret contents of storage unit 44 and having to reclaim a classified artifact to prevent an alien invasion.
Season 2 (issues #5-8) established the new status quo for the agents as they tackled a new case in each issue, or gave a glimpse into (wacky) day-to-day life around Area 51. However, the end of issue 8 will shake up everything. Everything.
Season 3 (issues #9-12—Geez, I hope we get to these) deals with the fallout of the events in issue 8 and pushes our agents to the limit. What happens to someone when they’re forced into extreme situations each day? What does hunting monsters and cryptids and aliens do to a person? We’re gonna show you.
Sneak Peek!
Enough blah blah! More pictures!
Done and done! Here’s the first four pages of the issue to whet your whistle:
Thanks for Reading!
Again, I’d love it if Unit 44 wasn’t canceled, so consider preordering your copy of issue #8. And if you’d like to support our series further, adding to your cart the Unit 44 vol. 1 GIANT (collecting #1-4), along with issues #5-7! That’s more than 100 pages of content for less than $15!
