That Captain Edwards sure knows how to win friends and influence people, huh? Gosh, is he going to spend this whole story in over his head? PROBABLY.

Virtual Letters Column
Kevin dropped back in and said…
Well a great way to start a Tuesday with the next installment. I’m a fan of Unit 44 but this by far is your best work. The conversation about not getting attached and only knowing each other because they are in space. Great writing. Plus I’m glad to see they aren’t giving up on commander Edwards Yet. Question: Do the aliens know how to speak English? How does Commander Edwards understand them? (I might have missed that). Anyway thank you for the continued story.
Hey again, Kevin! Thank you for the kind words. It’s exciting to me that those readers who may be most familiar with my zany sci-fi/comedy series Unit 44 are able to see what else I have published over the years. (Did you know that I’ve published 6 graphic novels and 30 comics?? It’s quite the spread!)
To answer your question: Yes, the aliens—just like many people in the world—are fluent in multiple languages. After all, they live in a multi-galactic culture. The humans, however, do not. (Fun that you picked up on this tidbit. It hasn’t been addressed head-on, but will be poked at, so keep an eye out!)
Cover Gallery!
Let’s check out artist Graeham Jarvis’s original four covers for Awry. No big spoilers, but they are wonderful pieces of art that deserve to be respected in their own right.
NOTE: These are the cover versions WITHOUT the publisher’s marks added. Because, why on Earth would I promote them at this point?
So moody, am I right? I still remember when Graeham shared these images with me and they perfectly suit the vibe of the series. Each cover did a solid job at showcasing a moment from the issue, previewing characters, and setting the overall tone.
I also love a great, simple comic book logo. I designed the one for Awry myself. Well, I say “designed” but really, I just threw a good-looking font onto the cover of the book. HOWEVER, I did use the logo to add depth to the covers, which I still think was a super cool touch.
All comic book logos are not created equal. A comic logo should be big and legible—able to be clearly read among a shelf-full of other comics. It also should be able to be any color it needs to be. Granted, they’re all white here, but the logo could easily be any color to compliment the rest of the cover. But because we are professionals, Graeham and I decided on our color scheme of blues, oranges, and reds relatively quickly, and white looks darn good with all of those.
Oh, and as a bonus, here’s a fun little image that Graeham made when we were doing our part to hype up the original release of the book!
Questions? Comments? Secrets?
Chapter 6 is right around the corner (and marks the halfway point of the series)!
This is becoming a regular Column for me haha. But this tale is well deserving of my time. As I read this I was thinking how much money needs to be raised to by the rights so you can continue the tales. Or if it has a definite ending to just stay in this world. Love the art. I found myself smiling and had some chuckles. Love Commander Edwards sarcasm while he is processing this new situation. Just fantastic funny book content. Was hoping to see what was going on back at the ship. As they seemed to be ready to attempt a rescue mission. Keep sharing, I’ll keep reading. It’s a shame not more people are getting access to this. I bet this would do great on Indy Planet if you could ever weasel the rights back
